THE OUTLANDISH KNIGHT
04:56
|
|||
An outlandish knight came from the northland,
He courted a lady fair,
He said he would take her to those northern lands,
And there he would marry her.
Fetch some of your Father’s gold,
And some of your mother’s fee,
And two of the horses from out of the stables,
Where there stands thirty and three.
So she’s mounted on the lily white steed,
And he the dapple grey,
They’ve road til they’ve come unto the seaside,
Three hours before it was day.
Light off, light off your lily white steed,
Deliver it unto me,
For six pretty maidens have I drowned here,
And the seventh will surely be thee.
And take off, take off your silken gowns,
Deliver them unto me,
For I do fear that they are too fine,
To rot in the salt, salt sea.
If I take off my silken gowns,
Then turn your back on me,
For it is not fitting that such a cruel rogue,
A naked women should see.
And cut away the brambles so sharp,
The brambles from off the brim,
For I do fear that they’ll tangle my hair,
And scratch my tender skin.
So he’s turned his back all on the fair maid,
And leant down over the brim,
She’s taken him by his slender waist,
And tumbled him into the stream.
Lie there, lie there you false hearted man,
Lie there instead of me,
For six pretty maidens have you drowned here,
And the seventh has drowned thee.

The Youthful Boy
05:43
|
|||
My love is on the water let him sink or swim,
If he can be without me then I’ll be without him,
My love he is a youthful boy but younger though am I,
And countless times he told me that he’d marry me or die.
Chorus
And oh won’t you help me now to sail on the sea,
I’ll drift over perfect waters, I’ll break free.
Our meeting is a pleasure but the parting is a grief,
A false hearted cruel man is worse than a thief,
A thief he will steal from you but leave you with a heart,
A false-hearted lover he will pick your soul apart.
Chorus
I have been forsaken but my heart forewarned,
And surely he’s mistaken if he thinks that I’ll mourn,
I’ll take off the black dress and I will wear the green,
The shards of ice within my heart will never more be seen.
Chorus
My love is on the water let him sink or swim,
If he can be without me then I’ll be without him,
My love he is a youthful boy but younger though am I,
And though I’m fair I will not dare to love more til I die.
Chorus

We Will Sing
04:11
|
|||
When May comes in she brings the flowers,
We will sing, we will sing,
And winter by the door she cowers,
We will sing, we will sing.
Chorus
With ribbons we will deck and trim,
To welcome May and summer in,
We will sing and we will sing.
When blossom hangs on every tree,
We will sing, we will sing,
We’ll take a branch for you and me,
We will sing, we will sing.
Chorus
The sun will warm now winter’s past,
We will sing, we will sing,
And those in love can breathe at last,
We will sing, we will sing.
Chorus
The corn in yonder field it grows,
We will sing, we will sing,
The willows dance and the stream it flows,
We will sing, we will sing.
Chorus
So rise up now this merry day,
We will sing, we will sing,
And raise a glass to welcome May,
We will sing, we will sing.

Bonny Bairns
05:43
|
|||
A lady walked in yon wild woods,
Beneath the holly tree,
It was there she spied two bonnie bairns,
There running at her knee.
The first she pulled a red, red rose,
With hands as soft as silk,
The next she pulled a lily pale,
With hands more white than milk.
“Why do you pull the red, red rose,
And why the lily white?”
“We need them at the seat of grace,
For the soul of thee tonight.”
“Oh bide with me you bonnie bairns,
I’ll dress you rich and fine,
And for all the blackbirds in the woods,
You’ll eat white bread and wine.”
The stars were shooting to and fro,
But the thorns she did abhor,
As the lady followed the bonnie bairns,
For three long hours and more.
“Where do you dwell you bonnie bairns,
I’m woe and weary grown”,
“We live where woe it never comes,
In a land to flesh unknown.”
They came unto a tree of beech,
Two names carved in the bark,
“Do you see your name carved here lady,
The other lies in the dark.”
She wept in vain and she wept full sore,
For her love laid in the ground,
She wept until the stars gave way,
And the dawn it brought no sound

Three Jolly Fishermen
03:39
|
|||
We are three jolly fishermen,
We are three jolly fishermen,
We are three jolly fishermen,
While the merry, merry bells do ring.
We cast our nets into the sea,
We cast our nets into the sea,
We cast our nets into the sea,
While the merry, merry bells do ring.
Chorus
Make haste, make haste,
We’ll be too late,
One fish my dear,
I cannot wait,
For my fine fry of herring,
My bonnie silver herring,
Mind how you sell them,
While the merry, merry bells do ring.
We sell them three for four pence,
We sell them three for four pence,
We sell them three for four pence,
While the merry, merry bells do ring.
There’s white and speckled bellied ‘uns,
There’s white and speckled bellied ‘uns,
There’s white and speckled bellied ‘uns,
While the merry merry bells do ring.
Chorus
From tail to head they’re gleaming,
From tail to head they’re gleaming,
From tail to head they’re gleaming,
While the merry merry bells do ring.

I Am Sad
05:06
|
|||
The summertime is full of flowers,
And the gardens are all gay,
They drink the sunshine and the showers,
And laugh the hours away,
The trees are clad in robes of green,
And the birds among them sing,
But I am sad and can’t be glad,
For my joy has ta’en the wing,
Oh I am sad and can’t be glad,
For my joy has ta’en the wing.
I used to love the summertime,
I used to love the spring,
But now my love has proved untrue,
No joy to me they bring,
It seems as if the wintertime,
Has passed all o’re the year,
It’s very cold within my heart,
And it’s dark without my dear,
It’s very cold within my heart,
And it’s dark without my dear.
Oh heart of mine with blighted love,
What power thy life can save,
I’m like a yew tree dark and sad,
Beside a lonesome grave,
My love I’ll call both loud and long,
And in my tears I’ll cry,
I know he’ll never love me more,
So loveless must I die,
I know he’ll never love me more,
So loveless must I die

After This
04:50
|
|||
After this you’ll never really fall,
Broken dreams were never there at all,
Broken seems a solemn bird,
But when she sings she’s always heard.
After this there’s colour in the sky,
Broken cloud brings promise to the lie,
Broken seems a solemn bird,
But when she sings she’s always heard.
Chorus
And the bells were ringing la la la la la,
Bells were ringing la la,
Bells were ringing la la,
Bells were ringing.
After this there’s calm upon the sea,
Broken waves can’t ever bother me,
Broken seems a solemn bird,
But when she sings she’s always heard.
Chorus
After this the moon will be at peace,
Broken stars will gather to increase,
The light that shines the way to love,
She knows theres angels now above,
Broken seems a solemn bird,
But when she sings she’s always heard

The Magic Penny
04:49
|
|||
saddled my horse and I galloped away,
Til’ I came to an ale house in town,
I called for some ale at the end of the day,
And here by the fire sat down
Chorus
And I had in my pocket a penny,
And a penny was all that I had,
I called for some ale at the end of the day,
But a penny was all that I had
I saw there two gentlemen playing at dice,
They took me for a soldier bold,
With my swagger and rapier and countenance nice,
Thought my pockets were lined with gold
Chorus
I had in my pocket a penny,
And a penny was all that I had,
With my swagger and rapier and countenance nice,
A penny was all that I had.
“Oh soldier dear sir” they said “do you play?”
“What stakes do you lay down?”
One said a guinea we’re meaning to play,
I said “let’s lay down five pound
Chorus
I had in my pocket a penny,
And a penny was all that I had,
One said a guinea we’re meaning to play,
But a penny was all that I had
I took up the dice and I threw them the main,
The night was free from curse,
The heavens I thanked for I managed to gain,
For I there down a moneyless purse.
Chorus
I had in my pocket a penny,
And a penny was all that I had,
The heavens I thanked for I managed to gain,
And a penny was all that I had.
Was ever a mortal as quarter as glad,
Courage galore in my spine,
With the littlest money that first I had,
Now I pray you to pour out the wine.
Chorus
And I had in my pocket a penny,
And a penny was all that I had,
With the littlest money that first I had,
A penny was all that I had.

The Night Visit
05:42
|
|||
I must away love, no longer tarry,
This roaring tempest I have to cross,
I will be guided without a stumble,
Into the arms I love the best,
Into the arms I love the best.
And when he came up to his true love’s dwelling,
He’s knelt down gently upon the stone,
And through the window he’s whispered softly,
Is my true lover within at home,
Is my true lover within at home.
She’s raised her up from off her pillow,
She’s raised her up from off her bed,
And through the window she whispered softly,
Who’s that disturb’th my own nights rest,
Who’s that disturb’th my own nights rest.
Wake up, wake up now it’s your own true lover,
Wake up,wake up now and let me in,
Oh how the wind blows and how it thunders,
Oh I am wet love unto the skin,
Oh I am wet love unto the skin.
She’s raised her up from off her pillow,
She’s raised her up and through the door,
And they were locked in each others arms,
Until the long night was passed and o’re,
Until the long night was passed and o’re.
And when the long night was passed and over,
And when the dawn clouds they did divide,
He’s leaned down gently and kissed her softly,
He’s saddled up and away did ride,
He’s saddled up and away did ride

Silly Old Man
05:08
|
|||
Come and I’ll sing you a song of intent,
Concerning a silly old man,
Who went off to pay to the landlord his rent,
And into some trouble he ran.
For as he was riding along the green way,
A gentleman thief passed him by,
“I’m company sir, do you need me to stay”
“Oh no” was the old man’s reply.
“Oh as you can see I’m a silly old man,
I farm but a parcel of ground,
To the land lord I go” said the silly old man,
“to pay up my rent forty pound”
“But what if you meet with a highway man here,
Their numbers are many I’ll bid”,
“Oh I will not worry and I will not fear,
for inside my saddle it’s hid”.
The two of them rode then as fast as they can,
Til’ the gentleman thief up he sped,
“Oh stand and deliver you silly old man,
You should have stayed home in your bed”.
But the old man was crafty and cunning and sly,
And long on this earth he had been,
His saddle he tossed o’re the hedge with a cry,
Saying “fetch it yourself you young fiend”.
The thief being thirsty for silver and gold,
Was eager to get to the bags,
He drew out his rusty old sword then so bold,
And chopped up the saddle to rags.
The old man he jumped off his tired old horse,
And mounted the thief’s horse astride,
He gave her a kick to a gallop of course,
And away to the town he did ride.
When he came to the landlords he came with good cheer,
But never the story he told,
The thief’s bag he opened to buy them some beer,
It was brimming with silver and gold.
The rent it was paid, and the debt was made good,
The silly old man journeyed back,
And there in the lane his old mare she stood,
With nought but the hair on her back.
He loosened the mare then from where she was tied,
And gave her a slap with his whip,
Saying come along home now and stay by my side,
And off down the lane they did trip.
When he came to his house there was joy and delight,
His daughter she dressed like a queen,
His old wife she danced an old jig through the night,
So much money she never had seen

Ghost
05:46
|
|||
Oh dear my heart is taken from my chest,
Oh dear my heart is taken I can never rest,
And by the moon I can feel your heart beating,
By the moon I can hear you call.
Chorus
Here in the dark my love wonders on,
When the cruel morning comes,
Then again he’s gone, gone.
Brave though the stars they make me I can’t breath,
Brave though the stars they make me I can never leave,
And by the moon where you walk I can follow,
By the moon I can hear you call.
Chorus
When all the world it sleeps and the moon plays host,
When all the world it sleeps, then I see your ghost,
By the moon, there your pale lips they haunt me,
By the moon, in your tender arms it daunts me,
By the moon I can hear you call.
Chorus
Here in the dark my love wonders on,
When the cruel morning comes,
Then again he’s
Here in the dark my love wonders on,
And the cruel morning comes,
And again he’s,
Here in the dark my love wonders on,
When the cruel morning comes,
Then again he’s gone, gone
Here in the dark my love wonders on.
