Life in a Paper Boat is the 14th solo album by Kate Rusby, released in October 2016.
This CD includes the bonus track Big Brave Bill.

The album features her signature mix of traditional and original songs, whilst marking a sonic development from previous releases: synthesizers and drum programming were used extensively throughout the record.

Critics described the sonic change as "done in the best possible taste"
You can get lost in the the soundscape.
It's a modern context retaining all the elements of the folk tradition.

The album's title track, written by Kate, was inspired by the European migrant crisis. In "Hunter Moon," another original, the moon is in love with the sun—and longingly tracks the sun's progress every day, from dawn to sunset.

Oh young Janie fair by feature, She would never a bargain miss, She asked Damon, greedy creature, Thirty sheep for one small kiss. CHORUS Oh Janie, sweet Janie Please be patient and don’t be keen, When you find him you’ll remind him, He’s the King, you are the Queen. Oh the next day on the morrow, Heart full bursting and kept from sleep, She gives Damon to her sorrow, Thirty kisses for just one sheep. CHORUS Oh the next day grown more tender, Oh young Janie it’s come to this, Thirty sheep she will surrender, For just one single loving kiss. CHORUS Oh another day is over, Sheep and dog he just might get, But young Damon no more the rover, For her kisses remains in debt.
4.
A boat made of paper it set sail with me, And oh how I’ve grown weary, That boat of shame it took me now I’m far from free, And oh won’t you stay near me. CHORUS Hope it bloomed eternal there, Upon the promised land, Will it wither now, Or will I feel my feet upon the sand? This bundle that I carry is worth more to me than life, And oh how I’ve grown weary There’s only me to hold her now that I’m no more a wife, And oh won’t you stay me. CHORUS An ancient land I’ve left behind in ruins now lies she, And oh how I’ve grown weary, I must build a new land now with walls to keep her free, And oh won’t you stay near me. CHORUS My heart is in my hand now we are on the open sea, And oh how I’ve grown weary, Thank God she won’t remember this whatever it may be, And oh won’t you stay near me. CHORUS The orange sun was burning, On the boat where we all stand, Hope it bloomed eternal there, Upon the promised land, Will it wither now, Or will I feel my feet upon the sand?
5.
I was not born a Queen or King, I have no house nor anything, In comfort none can equal me, I’m what they all would die to be. CHORUS Walk in the sun stay in the light, And when we’re done we’ll take flight, Only desire what you have, Only desire what you have. My alter is the breath of life, For wisdom grace and love I strife, While evil games the greedy play, There’s only nature I obey. CHORUS I’ll have no check upon my glass, Let the hours of joy and laughter pass, Let night into the morning fold, Let a whole new day of life take hold. CHORUS I’ll journey on I’ll sing and dance, And the greedy ones can make their stance, With pockets for souls they’ll never fill, With happy heart I’m smiling still. CHORUS X 2
6.
If I had a hundred hearts, Never would one stray from thee, If I had a hundred hearts, Like seeds in a garden they’d grow for me. If I had a hundred eyes, You alone those eyes would see, If I had a hundred eyes, Like sun in the garden they’d shine on thee. If I had a hundred tongues, They would speak of none but thee, If I had a hundred tongues, Like birds in a garden they’d sing for me. If I had a hundred souls, Bursting full each soul would be, If I had a hundred souls, Like fruit in a garden upon each tree. If we had a hundred years, You could keep your hand in mine, If we had a hundred years, Like trees in a garden we’ll stand entwined. Like trees in a garden we’ll stand entwined.

The Mermaid 04:30
Farewell the rolling hills and farewell to the field, Farewell, love, my fate tonight is sealed, On the sea love, on the sea. High are the daunting waves and bold the wind it blows, I can see, love, the mermaid and she knows, On the sea, love, on the sea. CHORUS And peace as the sea it calms, And peace now in her arms, Where I’ll be, love, sleeping in the sea. My father built a bonnie ship and set her on the sea, It was his joy, love, he gave that ship to me, On the sea, love, on the sea. On oceans high and oceans low we sailed that ship around, We owned the tide, love, for glory we were bound, On the sea, love, on the sea. CHORUS And three times that ship went round and three times round went she, It’s murky deep, love and far away from thee, On the sea, love, on the sea. So farewell the rolling hills and farewell to the field, Farewell, love, my fate tonight is sealed, On the sea, love, on the sea. CHORUS

We are one, two, three jolly lads all in one line, We have come a pace egging and I hope you prove kind, And I hope you prove kind with your eggs and strong beer, We’ll come no longer by you until the next year. The next that comes in it’s Lord Nelson you’ll see, With a bunch of blue ribbons tied down to his knee, And a star on his chest like silver does shine, And I hope you’ll remember it’s pace egging time. The next that comes in it is Jolly Jack Tar, He sailed with Lord Nelson during the last war, He has come from the sea old England to view, And he’s come a pace egging with our jovial crew. The next that comes in it is Lord Collingwood, He fought with Lord Nelson ‘til he shed his blood, He fought with Lord Nelson through sorrow and woe, And I hope you’ll reward him before you do go. Then in comes Old Miser with all his brown bags, For fear of his money he wears his old rags, So see what you do, and mind that all’s right, If we get nowt we’ll take nowt, Farewell and goodnight. We are one, two, three jolly lads all in one line, We have come a pace egging and I hope you prove kind, And I hope you prove kind with your eggs and strong beer, We’ll come no longer by you until the next year. And I hope you prove kind with your eggs and strong beer, We’ll come no longer by you until the next year.

Pale was the wounded knight, that bore the rowan shield, And loud and clear were the raven’s cries as he feasted on the field. Saying “Green moss and heather bands will never staunch the flood, There’s none but the Witch o’ the Westmorland can save thy dear life’s blood”. Oh and turn, turn your stallion’s head, ‘til his red mane flies in the wind, And the rider of the moon goes by and the bright star falls behind, And clear was the paley moon when shadow passed him by, And below the hill was the brightest star, when he heard the owlet cry. Saying “why do you ride this way and wherefore came you here?” “I seek the Witch o’ the Westmorland that dwells by the winding mere. It’s weary by the Ullswater and misty the brake fern way, And through the cleft of the Kirkstone pass where the winding waters lay. Saying, “lie down my bridled hound and rest ye my good grey hawk” And thee my steed will graze thy fill for I must dismount and walk, But come when you hear my horn, and answer swift the call, For I fear when the sun will rise this morn you’ll serve me best of all”. And it’s down to the waters brim he’s borne the rowan shield, And the golden rod he has cast in to see what the lake might yield, And wet rose she from the lake, and fast and fleet went she, One half the form of a maiden fair with a jet-black mare’s body. And loud, long and shrill he blew ‘til his steed was by his side, High overhead the grey hawk flew and swiftly he did ride. Saying, “course well my brindled hound and fetch me the jet black mare, And stoop and strike my good grey hawk and bring me the maiden fair”. And she said “pray sheath thy silvery sword, lay down thy rowan shield, For I see by the briny blood that flows you’ve been wounded on the field”, And she stood in a gown of velvet blue, bound round with a silver chain, She’s kissed his pale lips once and twice and three times round again. She’s bound his wounds with the golden rod, full fast in her arms he lay, And he has risen whole and sound with the sun high in the day. And she said “ride with your brindled hound, and your good grey hawk in hand, For there’s none can harm the knight whose lain with the Witch o’ the Westmorland, No there’s none can harm the knight whose lain with the Witch o’ the Westmoreland.

I'll Be Wise 05:06
There I see him, I swore I’d walk on by him, But I cannot resist and stop to eye him. CHORUS But when evening’s here, my heart it sighs, And then I’m clear, tomorrow I’ll be wise. And there I see him, He smiles and I am near him, My ears they long to hear him. CHORUS And there I see him, I take a chance and then I’ve told him, A tender glance and then I hold him. CHORUS But there I see him, There and then I knew I miss him, I take his hand and then I kiss him. CHORUS But there I see him, Alas I was wrong how I perceived him, Another girl she has received him, Oh my poor heart almost believed him. CHORUS

Night Lament 05:06
I come to thee oh earth, With my gifts for every flower, Gem like dew I cast with mirth, With gentle calm and proud with power. CHORUS On and on each day is done, On and on triumphant, as each night is won. I come with every star, A thousand voices hushed in tone, I whisper stories from afar, Bathed in light I stand alone. CHORUS I come from ancient Kings, Through sleeping leaves I bring the storm, With no remorse the tempest sings, Through every tree and field and form. CHORUS I come from moonlight sky, A song of peace to all who sleep, On silver wings I gently fly, A harbour safe from swirling deep. I come from far at sea, Where dawning light it shadows me, Skimming waves I go with glee, The endless hunt it keeps me free. CHORUS On and on chased by the sun, On and on each day is done, On and on triumphant, as each day is done.
